My name is Cynthia Linnet Lau and I was born in Holguin, Cuba and grew up in the United States. I am twenty-two years old with Cuban, Chinese and Spanish roots. I have a double degree in Psychology and Health Sciences. Resilient, compassionate, and survivor would be the three words that define me. I am a firm believer of “if a problem arises, come up with a solution, and run with it”. I live by this mantra since I was 13 years old, when I was diagnosed with a Gastro Intestinal Tumor and my life would never be the same. The word CANCER is one of the scariest things for someone to hear, and so when it knocks on your door you cry, hope, struggle but above all else look for the cure.
As a future Master’s of Public Health candidate, I will specialize in Health Policy and Management to help find compelling solutions for health care and public health problems on a global scale. Being an advocate for cancer research and utilizing my voice as an outlet to tell my story on behalf of those affected by cancer and life-threatening illnesses has been one of the biggest accomplishments in my life to date. Working avidly with the Make a Wish Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and the American Cancer Society: Cancer Action Network has offered me opportunities beyond my wildest dreams. My role as an intern, volunteer, and now ambassador for these organizations have allowed me to go to Congress and speak to legislators on the importance of medical research funding and cancer prevention.
Ballroom dance, belly dance, acting, modeling and piano are my favorite pastimes. I have been a dancer all my life being trained in ballroom dance and belly dance, I have danced in national congresses and most recently danced with my belly dance team at the Miami Belly Dance Convention. Playing the piano for 8 years taught me discipline, my theatrical experience along with modeling have been the center for creativity and self expression. On several occasions, you will also find me discovering new destinations around the world.
